The Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen

Which fruits and vegetables carry the heaviest pesticide load, which ones you can safely buy conventional, and how to spend your grocery budget where it actually changes your exposure.

What these lists are

Each year the Environmental Working Group analyzes USDA and FDA pesticide residue testing on conventionally grown produce and ranks it. The twelve items with the highest residues become the Dirty Dozen. The fifteen with the lowest become the Clean Fifteen. Importantly, that testing happens after the produce has been washed and, where relevant, peeled, so what shows up is what a shopper would actually be exposed to. Why we care about this at the clinic

Pesticide residue is one input into your total toxic burden, and toxic burden is one of the things we assess when symptoms are not adding up. What is the Clean Fifteen?

The Clean Fifteen is the companion list: the fifteen conventional fruits and vegetables with the lowest detected pesticide residues. These are the items where buying organic makes the least difference to your exposure, which helps you spend your grocery budget where it matters.

Does washing produce remove the pesticides?

Washing helps with surface residue, but many pesticides are systemic, meaning the plant absorbs them as it grows and they cannot be rinsed off. USDA residue testing is done after produce has been washed and, where applicable, peeled.

Do I have to buy everything organic?

No, and most families cannot. The practical approach is to prioritize organic for the Dirty Dozen items you eat most often, buy conventional from the Clean Fifteen, and use the savings on quality protein and fats. Eating conventional produce is still far better than eating no produce.

Why does pesticide exposure matter for my health?
