Diabetes
According to the 2017 National Diabetes Statistics Report, there are 30.3 million people in the United State living with diabetes. That’s close to 1 in 10 people. Prediabetes means a person has too high of blood sugar, or glucose, levels and are on their way to developing diabetes. Prediabetes should be a wake-up call that you need to take better care of your health. A recent study estimated by 2060 the number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes is expected to triple! Clearly, this is a health problem that every person needs should understand. Glucose is the fuel that feeds your body’s cells, but to enter the cells it needs a key. Insulin is that key.
There are two main types of diabetes, type I and type II.
Type I diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas cells that produce insulin. Without insulin the blood glucose levels continue to rise, and this can become very dangerous. Type I diabetes requires insulin injections to help regulate the blood glucose levels.
Type II diabetes is when the pancreas can no longer make enough insulin or when the body does not use insulin properly because of insulin resistance which leads to high blood glucose levels. Lifestyle factors of obesity and inactivity are major contributors to developing type II diabetes.
Did you know the rates if childhood obesity have tripled since the 1970’s? Children don’t get out and play as much as they used to. To help lower rates of obesity children and parents need to get out and play! You also need to get the sugar and carbohydrates out of your diet. Most people don’t realize how much sugar and carbohydrates are harming their bodies and the bodies of their children. These cause inflammation in the body which is directly tied to developing any type of disease including diabetes.
